A tooth extraction is a dental procedure in which a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone.

This procedure is typically performed when a tooth is severely damaged, can no longer be saved, or needs to make room for other dental treatments.

After patient education and medical history assessment, the affected area is locally anesthetized to prevent pain. The Dentist loosens the tooth with special instruments (e.g., a lever) by gently moving the tooth back and forth.

As soon as the tooth is sufficiently loosened, it is pulled out with a pair of pliers. After the extraction, the wound is cleaned and, if necessary, stitched.

A sterile dressing is applied, and the patient receives instructions for aftercare, including pain management, infection prevention, and dietary adjustments.

Why is an extraction necessary?

  1. Severe caries (tooth decay): If a tooth is so badly damaged by decay that it can no longer be repaired, extraction is necessary.
  2. Infections: In the case of a severe tooth infection or abscess that cannot be treated with a root canal, the tooth must be removed to stop the infection.
  3. Periodontal diseases: Advanced gum disease can lead to loosening and loss of the tooth-supporting tissues, which requires extraction.
  4. Overcrowding: In cases of lack of space in the mouth, for example, before orthodontic treatment, an extraction may be necessary to correct the position of the teeth.
  5. Dental anomalies: Severely deformed or poorly developed teeth can be extracted to improve oral health.
  6. Wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth that have no space or are misaligned and cause pain or infections often need to be removed.
  7. Dental trauma: Severely damaged teeth from accidents or injuries that cannot be repaired must be extracted.
  8. Failed root canal treatments: If a root canal treatment was unsuccessful and the tooth continues to cause problems, extraction is the best solution.

These reasons illustrate why a tooth extraction is sometimes necessary to maintain overall oral health and to avoid pain or further complications.
